“Au Naturel” N° KS-003

10 × 10 cm Kinusaiga textile picture of a puffin's head in profile: light grey head, black eye and cap, beak in orange geometric cretonne, on a turquoise background, edged with orange bias tape.

"Intuitions" Range / Theme Nature The Discovery Kit's guinea pig. A small graphic picture in turquoise, grey, black and orange, which was used to test the kit before its launch.

Its story

This one is my guinea pig. When I started preparing the Discovery Kit, and so choosing the patterns I'd offer, I needed to check a few things before diving in: is it doable, what level does it take, and what result can you get as a beginner?
It also helped me confirm the colour range I wanted.

For the pattern, I wanted a bird, but not a twee little bird. The Kinusaiga you usually see is rather figurative, very soft, very feminine: flowers, cute little birds... You don't come across a puffin every day: in France, it only nests in Brittany, on the Sept-Îles archipelago. And with its shapes and colours, there's not much dainty about it 😏
Bonus: its silhouette is recognisable at a glance and simplifies easily, without too many fabric areas to inlay or parts that are too thin.

For the fabrics, I dipped into satin fabrics bought from a seamstress who was closing her workshop to retire. And for the beak, a cotton cretonne with a geometric, slightly Moroccan pattern, which I'd bought ages ago for the lining of the Cascade tote bag “Désert” (still available, the cretonne is on the inside 😉).

And if it's the puffin that caught your eye: it's in the Discovery Kit (instructions in French). Your fabrics won't necessarily be exactly the same as mine, but the pattern will.

Common questions

What is a Kinusaiga textile panel?

Kinusaiga is a Japanese craft technique that involves creating panels by tucking pieces of fabric into grooves cut into polystyrene, mounted on a wooden backing.

The result looks like a fabric stained glass window: crisp, graphic shapes, vivid colours, subtle relief, and the living texture of real textile on top of it all.

For you, it's a way to transform your sentimental fabrics into a genuine work of art to hang on your wall: a babywearing wrap, a scarf, a childhood fabric... cut, rearranged, framed. The textile is no longer tucked away in a cupboard: it's displayed, celebrated.

Would you rather be guided? I also run small-group workshops (six people maximum, 2.5 hours, €40 per person, snack on the house), with ready-made patterns or your own fabric. All the details and next dates on kinusaiga-sentimental.fr.

I offer fully bespoke Kinusaiga panels: pattern, size, colour palette, fabric layout, everything is decided together. If this idea speaks to you, let's talk it through during a discovery call.
