“Mordor”  CO-153

A shiny “bucket” bag made with shiny bronze fabric outlined by butter smooth matte black faux leather.

"Intuitions" Range / Theme Geometry If Mordor were a bag... Alliance of fiery lava and volcanic rock. Daring, stylish, unforgiving.

Its story

I love testing new patterns for designers. Discovering novel ideas before everyone, helping them refine the assembly and the instructions, even proofreding! Pattern design is such an interesting and exacting discipline that I deeply admire and sometimes delve in (I have 4 of my own).
This one was no exception, especially since it was from a French maker I'd been “hanging out with” in bag making groups and whose video tutorials I'd followed in the past. Go France!

The main design feature of this bag, the strap-like lines running up and down all around the body of the bag (that act as loops for the cinching cord), and the two triangle-shaped strap connectors, called for some serious contrast play. It was right away obvious to me that I needed to have a solid-colored material as the base on which to lay them. No small feat as I mainly have patterned fabrics... But!
I've found it challenging (but rewarding) to use this shiny bronze fabric (see the “Mosaïque” Shoulder Bag) and I figured it would be perfect for the job.

I've been on the lookout for a more sustainable alternative to imitation leather, which I usually don't buy fresh from the roll at stores as to not encourage production but which still fills the desire some of my clients have to have a vegan “leather-like” experience (and cork, as much as I love it, often just doesn't cut it for them)...
I was thrilled to discover SiLeather, a silicon-based imitation leather which involves half as much plastic as usual, as only the back contains some (polyester knit). Plus, the feel in hand is amazing: it's matte, supple and firm, “oily” as only some leathers can be, and comes with two grains.
I'd found my volcanic rock to my fiery lava, the orc-like rawness of it the perfect companion to the regal sophistication of the glittery magma in the background... The two triangles on the side reminded me of the central volcano of the (in)famous hellish land from Tolkien.
“Mordor” was thus very obvious as a name for the resulting bag.

Common questions

What materials do you use to make my pieces?

Your sentimental fabric or leather is always at the heart of the project. For the rest, here is what I use by default:

  • Exterior (beyond the fabric you provide): salvaged leather by default (cowhide, lambskin, goat, pig…); optionally: certified organic cotton canvas, cork on 100% cotton backing, Nisiar (grape marc “leather”)… No faux leather, ever.
  • Lining: 100% cotton poplin, cretonne or satin (organic where possible), 100% linen canvas, wool or wool-silk blend…
  • Interfacings (by design): certified organic cotton batting, Decovil Light or Heavy, Texon, Jeffitex…
  • Hardware: metal only — gold, antique gold, chrome, gunmetal, antique bronze, copper/rose gold, matte black, rainbow… Special colours available on request (extra cost and lead time).
  • Handles & straps: leather, canvas, your own fabric (if enough quantity), cork… in simple or bi-material styles. Or pre-made strap in 100% organic cotton or polycotton, plain or multicolour, per brief.

What do you do with your production offcuts?

Your own bespoke fabric offcuts aren't covered here: they're always sent back to you with your finished piece, unless you tell me to keep them or dispose of them differently.

As for my own production offcuts: nothing is thrown away if I can help it. They're reused in my workshop for reinforcement, worked into mosaics to create larger pieces, or used as is for small creations (keychains, bookmarks...). The rest is given away depending on its nature and size: to other artisans (such as jewellery makers), or to associations, community centres and schools for their workshops.

Why are there "Near-Perfect" items and what are they?

As part of my sustainable view of the modern luxury fashion, creating as little waste as possible is central. You can learn more about this on my Soulful Values page.

Charlotte’s baby wrap

After ordering a bag from stock, Charlotte realized it would be too small. I offered to make her a custom, larger version, and she sent me her baby wrap to transform.
